We Will Stand Up
A co-production between Downstream Documentary and the National Film Board of Canada, Tasha Hubbard’s nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up documented a central event in Canadian history, the shooting death of young Cree man Colten Boushie and the subsequent acquittal of farmer Gerald Stanley by an all-white jury. At once a searing critique of Canada’s legal system and a portrait of families standing up and demanding justice from the highest stages of power, it made history as the first Indigenous film to open the prestigious Hot Docs International Film Festival where it was awarded Best Canadian Feature, kicking off a remarkable (and ongoing) festival, community, theatrical, and broadcast run, with audiences hungry for stories reflecting the continuing injustices of Canada’s colonial heritage. Join Tasha and her co-producers George Hupka and Jon Montes for a candid discussion about the film and the team’s journey throughout production and release.
